Glossary

Aramid
A synthetic fiber with high tensile strength and low density. This yellow fiber is most commonly known by Dupont's trade name of Kevlar.

Bias
Refers to material cut or layed up at a 45 degree angle to the fiber bundle direction.

Caul Plate
A flat plate with a very smooth surface often used as a mold for flat panels.

Chopped Strand Matt
A common reinforcement made of random glass fibers held together by a styrene soluble binder.

Construction
The number of fiber bundles per inch. Typically, the higher the number, the tighter the weave.

Crowfoot Satin
A satin weave in which the bundles pass over three bundles and under one bundle.

Plain Weave
The most common weave style in which the fiber bundles alternate over one bundle and under one bundle.

S-Glass
High strength version of glass fiber stronger and stiffer than common E-Glass.

Satin Weave
Weave style in which the fiber bundles cross over three or more other fiber bundles before passing under a bundle. Satin weaves are more conformable and slightly stronger than plain weaves.

Tracer
An off-colored fiber woven into the fabric which helps to identify the fiber direction.

Unidirectional
Cloth in which more fibers run in one direction. Commonly referred to as "UNI."
